Dave Ullrich speaks:
PF Records is the label with many lives. Back when the Inbreds were starting out, it was near impossible to get a show at any local Kingston bars, and the only solution was to release an independent cassette. My brother was able to rhyme off the name Proboscis-Funkstone as he churned out our first computer-processed tape cover for
Darn Foul Dog
, while we did some songs on a rented four-track. Presenting these tapes out to college radio and our friends showed us that this was a good option to get out the word.
We hooked up with our friends in The Seamonsters and The Hammertones to put out the first round of PF tapes. The reaction to all this was good, but the next phase came when we put on the first of our PF showcase shows in Kingston. Using the help of new friends, The Shermans and The Stonecutters, we had an amazing turnout for our first show at the Caribbean. Tape debuts that night, cut and stuffed on the spot, include our
Egrog
, Los Seamonsters
Andy Foote EP
, and The Hammertones
Skintightbickerdink
.
The third phase of PF happened when both The Caspers, Yellowbelly, and wholesome joined the ship right around the time we released our first CD,
Hilario
. We were able to start moving the PF shows into cities around Ontario including Toronto, London, and Ottawa. Also, the novelty items started showing up with the PF Mag, the PF Video, and the PF Christmas Compilation.
By the time we were able to release our second CD,
Kombinator
, most of the bands were still releasing new tapes and we were actually getting some mail in the PF mail-box. The fourth phase occurred when we had the opportunity to hook up with Tag/Atlantic in the U.S, allowing the
PF symbol
to make it on the worldwide release of Kombinator- representing the Kingston homefront.
Today, we sit at the fifth stage upon our recent move to Halifax with a new mailbox, and a new album on the way. Basically, we re not sure what will happen next...maybe we'll just start releasing comedy albums.
